The Grammar of Spice
$29.95

By Caz Hildebrand

Favorite quote: “Spices elevate our meals and our imagination. There is no substitute for a spice.”

From the publisher: “Even the most enthusiastic cooks and food lovers have jars of dusty powders inhabiting kitchen cabinets long past their expiration dates. We often don’t know much about them, where they come from, or how to use them. And yet, spices can elevate the everyday act of making and consuming food to a higher plane of experience.

Spices have played an intrinsic part in the human story, running through history, geography, anthropology, politics, religion, culture, art, and design. From alligator pepper seeds, which in the Yoruba culture are given to newborn babies to taste a few minutes after birth, to charoli seeds, which are used in traditional Indian desserts eaten during the festival of Holi, and caraway seeds, which were added to medieval love potions, each spice has its own significance in the lives of the people who use it.

The Grammar of Spice is a practical resource for cooks that also changes the way we understand the role spices play in defining not only our food but also our place in the world. Featuring custom illustrations for each of the more than sixty spices featured here—inspired by the work of Owen Jones, one of the great designers and travelers of his time—this beautiful, informative book celebrates the world of flavors that spices open up to us.”

A Greener Way to Cook for You and Your Family

By Anna Jones

Favorite quote: “This book is a celebration of food, cooking and togetherness; of the principles that ground how we live, cook and eat; of showing love to those we hold dear, to our communities and to ourselves.”

“The intention of all my books is to instill cooks with confidence beyond recipes, to help them be intelligent, adaptable cooks who enjoy making dinner with leftovers or odds and ends, as much as a recipe you have carefully shopped for. [….] These recipes are yours once the book is opened and you start cooking.”

From the publisher: Delectable recipes that are easy to make and that keep sustainability at the center of every dish.

Favorite review: “A book where thought meets practical action meets deliciousness.” —Yotam Ottolenghi

Global Recipes & Stories of an Ancient Seed

Favorite quote: “In the spirit of learning to enjoy cooking at home, I would encourage you to use this book as a gateway into the world of possibility — as inspiration for menu planning, for new or unexpected flavor combinations, or for easy and elegant plating and presentation ideas. With few exceptions, it’s hard to go wrong with these recipes.”

From the publisher: Through vibrant photography, evocative storytelling, and contributions from a slate of noted chefs and food luminaries across the globe, including David Lebovitz, Molly Yeh, Nisha Vora, and Zoë François, Sesame is a loving culinary tribute to the sesame seed: how it has transformed dishes, how it has been translated by different culinary cultures, and how it has tied people and places together through generations. The Book of Difficult Fruit
$18.00

Arguments for the Tart, Tender, and Unruly (with recipes)

By Kate Lebo

Favorite quotes: “P is for pomegranate. The earth where we raise our crops is the dirt where wet bury our bodies. Pomegranates represent this same contradiction, the complete cycle: life and death and life again, returning new, returning transformed.”

“Q is for quince, which , when fresh, gives off the scent of ‘roses and citrus, and rich women’s perfume,’ but if eaten raws so astringent it wicks the juice from one’s mouth”.

From the publisher:  In a work of unique invention, difficult fruits serve as the central ingredients of twenty-six alphabetical, lyrical essays (with recipes). What makes a fruit difficult? Its cultivation, its harvest, its preparation, the brevity of its moment for ripeness, its tendency toward rot or poison, the way it might overrun your garden. Here, these fruits will take you on unexpected turns and give sideways insights into relationships, self-care, land stewardship, medical and botanical history, and so much more. What if the primary way you show love is through baking, but your partner suffers from celiac disease? Why leave in the pits for Willa Cather’s plum jam? How can we rely on bodies as fragile as the fruits that nourish them?
